Causes of scalp psoriasis
Scalp and other forms of psoriasis occur when the immune system doesn’t work correctly. Skin cells grow too quickly, within days rather than weeks. As the body can’t shed these skin cells fast enough, they pile up on the skin’s surface, causing psoriasis.
This condition is not contagious, but it can be hereditary.
How to treat scalp psoriasis at home
Most treatments for scalp psoriasis include topical medications, light therapy, and other medications that affect the entire body. Home remedies can also be added to help reduce and combat the condition.
A variety of home remedies can help reduce the itch and other associated symptoms. However, home remedies are not proven cures. They can be used for mild to moderate situations. More severe cases of scalp psoriasis should be spoken over with a doctor before using home remedies.
The following home remedies are helpful.
- Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar may help reduce the itching and soreness on your scalp. It can be applied to the affected areas two to three times a week.
It can be diluted with water to reduce the concentration. Remember to rinse it off with water once it’s dry. Do not apply on cracked or broken skin, as it will cause more irritation or burning.
- Aloe vera
Studies suggest that aloe Vera improves psoriasis. Its anti-inflammatory properties help to decrease the redness.
Creams that contain 0.5% of Aloe Vera should be applied to the affected areas, up to three times a day, to keep it moist. Aside from reducing the redness, this will also help to reduce inflammation, itching, and flaking.
This is what makes chili peppers hot. Research has shown that it can combat the redness, itching, flaking, and inflammation of psoriasis.
Creams that contain capsaicin can be over the counter. This should be applied moderately over the affected areas, to see results.
Capsaicin may sting the skin. Care should be given during application to affected areas, to avoid open wounds, eyes, mouth, and other sensitive areas.
- Baking soda
Baking soda has proven to be a quick and easy treatment for itchy scalp. Add one tablespoon of baking soda to a small glass of water and stir. Use a cotton pad to apply this mixture on the affected areas. You can also pour the solution on your head for better relief.
- Oregon Grape
Some studies have found this to be helpful, as its properties affect the body’s immune response. Apply creams that have a 10% concentration on affected areas.
The strong anti-inflammatory properties of garlic may help reduce the redness, itching, and flaking of scalp psoriasis.
Mix garlic with aloe Vera cream or gel, then apply to affected areas. Leave for about 20 minutes, then rinse off with water. This can be used daily.
- Avocado or coconut oil
We all know the healthy fats these fruits contain. This can help boost your skin health. It is advisable to massage a few drops onto the areas, leave for some minutes, then wash off.
This can help to keep the scalp moist and reduce the scaling.
- Sea salts
Also known as Epsom salt. Add this to warm water, and soak your head. It can also be included in bathwater.
Soak for about 15 minutes, and use a cream or moisturizer to seal in the water.
Turmeric is known for it’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This may help ease the symptoms of psoriasis.
You can include it to your meals, or take a supplement daily. This is considered safe and helpful.
Ginger has medicinal and anti-inflammatory properties. This may help to combat scalp psoriasis. You can add it to your shampoo and wash your hair with it.
- Take a dose of sunshine
Vitamin D from the sun may help ease the symptoms of psoriasis. You can wear sunscreen to shield unaffected areas. Take a walk and bask for about 15-20 minutes.
You may consider doing this early in the morning when the sun is less hot.
- Tea tree oil
This is believed to treat inflammatory conditions. It’s antiseptic properties can help reduce the itching and redness.
Some persons are allergic to this oil, so try to find out if you are. It can be mixed to your shampoo and used to wash your scalp.
- Shea butter
Shea butter is rich in vitamin A, Vitamin E, and triglycerides. It moisturized and nourished the scalp. It can also help remove the scales and flakes.
Massage a moderate amount on affected areas. You can leave it in or rinse off after a while with an antiseptic shampoo.
Surprised? Well, yogurt moisturizes the skin, thereby reducing the itchiness due to dryness and scales on the scalp. It also reduces dead skin cells.
Massage a sizeable amount on your scalp, leave to sit in for about half an hour, then rinse off with shampoo.
- Omega 3 fatty acids
These acids fight inflammation. You can get them from foods like salmon, tuna, and sardines. They can also be gotten from plant-based supplements like flax.
Taking up to 3 grams daily will be beneficial.
Oats are effective for itching, inflammation, and flaking. You can add a cup of raw ground oat, to your bath water and soak for some minutes. This may help your scalp.
